Fighting Discouragement in Our Daily Lives

It is easy to get frustrated with ourselves as parents.  We are trying to love our spouses, manage a household, raise our children, and, for many of us, work full time jobs.  It isn’t simple.  It isn’t always fun.  In fact, parenting can be downright hard!  Many of us feel discouraged over our roles and wonder if our everyday work is meaningless.

There are moments in the lives of parents when it feels like our days revolve around laundry, dirty dishes, discipline, and cleaning the house.  As soon as the windows are cleaned, little hand print appear.  The laundry pile dwindles; clothes and bedding are carefully folded and put away.  The next thing you know, an accident happens or we learn that the baseball uniform must be clean and ready to wear in 45 minutes.  It is a never ending cycle when taking care of kids.  The work is never finished.

When we were asked as kids what we wanted to be when we were grown, most of us didn’t think to answer with something like, “laundry master” or “greatest vacuumer in the world.”  These daily jobs can make us feel weary and insignificant.

Fortunately, the Bible offers some advice for these moments.  Psalms 90:17 says, “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us, establish the work of our hands for us-yes, establish the work of our hands.”  God wants us to do all of our duties cheerfully, willingly, and in a manner that glorifies Him.  Each job we complete throughout the day is important to the lives of our family and in the eyes of God.

If you are preparing for a new baby, know that every little outfit you prepare and every pack of diapers you buy is important.  When potty training a toddler, your patience is valued by God and by the precious child you are encouraging.  Raising teenagers may be the hardest of all, but God wants to walk with you.  He wants you to feel like you are doing a good job.

When the Bible tells us, “God will establish the work of our hands,” that doesn’t necessarily mean that everything you attempt will be successful.  It simply means that God wants you to feel like your everyday life is important.  Slowly, He is molding you into the person He wants you to become.  It may seem like you are sitting around waiting for the next important role, but you are in it right now!  God has you right where He wants you!
